BETON, Illinois – It’s possible that residents of a small town in southern Illinois felt a slight jolt on Sunday afternoon as a result of a minor earthquake.
A mile south of Benton, Illinois, the 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck shortly after 5:30 p.m. More than a mile below the surface, the earthquake took place.
About 82 miles separate Benton from St. Louis in the southeast.
The United States Geological Survey estimates that there are 1.3 million minor earthquakes (magnitude 2.0 to 2.9) every year.
