Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister, was shot and seriously hurt on Friday while running for office in southern Japan, according to officials.
Around 11:30 a.m., gunfire was heard as Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was delivering a speech in the city of Nara (10:30 p.m. Thursday ET). According to the local fire department and public broadcaster NHK, Abe was in a state of cardio and pulmonary arrest, which indicates that his heart had stopped.
It stated that he had been admitted to the hospital at Nara Medical University.
