Republican Illinois representative Adam Kinzinger predicted on Sunday that there won’t be any supporters of former president Donald Trump in the country in ten years.
He made the remark in response to a question about Republicans’ opinions regarding the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, during an interview on ABC’s This Week. The congressman is a member of the House select committee looking into the riot from last year, which has been holding a number of public hearings lately.
“Numerous recent polls indicate that Republicans have become significantly more likely to see the January 6 protest as a legitimate act of protest rather than an uprising in the past year. How would you elucidate that? “asked host George Stephanopoulos.
“Well, I believe that on the periphery, yes, it is piercing through, and I believe that what matters most is once again, what will history say in five or ten years?” The Republican lawmaker answered.
“I’m pretty sure there won’t be a single Trump supporter left in the country in about ten years, though I can’t absolutely guarantee it. Similar to Nixon, Many people supported Nixon up until his resignation, at which point everyone assumed that no one had ever backed him. That’s what I anticipate happening, “Kinzinger emphasized.
The congressman continued by stating that the media environment in the United States “kind of reinforces whatever you already believe.”
Moreover, he claimed that Trump “basically a cult leader at the moment. He is a man who can speak out and say whatever he wants, and these news outlets only serve to confirm that.”
Trump’s press office has been contacted by Newsweek for comment.
The former president is frequently criticized by Kinzinger. In a recent interview, he asserted that Trump was “not mentally capable to be president” if he “truly believed” that the 2020 election had been “stolen.”
Pat Cipollone, the former White House counsel for Donald Trump, testified in private to the House select committee on Friday. The committee then issued a statement on Saturday claiming that Cipollone “corroborated key elements” of Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, a former top White House aide, in his remarks to the panel.
When told he couldn’t join his supporters at the Capitol during the deadly insurrection, Hutchinson claimed during a public hearing last month that Trump tried to grab the wheel of the presidential limousine.
