On Saturday morning in Long Beach, police shot and killed a man who was carrying a gun on a rooftop after the man had allegedly abducted and assaulted another person earlier in the day, according to officials.
Around 11:10 a.m., Long Beach police officers responded to reports of a dispute inside a car and went to the 1100 block of East 17th Street, according to the police department. Police claim that when the officers arrived, they discovered a man holding a gun on a roof.
Authorities claim that the man was shot by police after he pointed a gun at them. The man, who was believed to be in his 30s or 40s, passed away there.
The man attempted to carjack, assaulted a victim physically, and kidnapped her before police arrived, according to a statement from Long Beach police.
According to the police report, the victim had non-life-threatening injuries to the upper body and was taken to a hospital.
Authorities claimed that officers fired handguns and an AR-15 patrol rifle at the suspect, though it was unclear how many shots were fired at the man or how many times he was hit. At the scene, a gun was found.
The man can be seen pacing on a roof, shouting, and waving what appears to be a gun in videos taken by neighbors and broadcast by KTLA-TV Channel 5. Police said that after firing foam projectiles at the man in an effort to subdue him, they also called in a SWAT team. Residents in the area were instructed to leave or take shelter.
The situation is still being looked into. According to Long Beach police, an independent investigation into the incident will be carried out by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, and officer body-cam footage will be made available to the public.
