After the shooting in Highland Park, the Blackhawks make a statement. This article first appeared on NBC Sports Chicago.
The Chicago Blackhawks said something Monday in response to the shootings that killed at least six people at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Highland Park is a wealthy suburb of Chicago that is more than 25 miles from the city.
“All of us at the Chicago Blackhawks are heartbroken for the friends and families of the innocent people who died today in Highland Park, as well as for those who were hurt and the children, neighbors, and first responders who were affected by this senseless act of violence,” the team said in a statement.
After that, it said:
“Everyone has the right to feel safe where they live, work, and play, and this can’t just be taken for granted.”
“We love you, Highland Park,” followed by a red heart emoji, was the last thing they said in their statement. This was also the last thing they tweeted.
The shooting happened during a town parade on Monday morning. As of Monday afternoon, six people were confirmed dead and dozens more were hurt. The gunman, who may have fired from a nearby roof, was at large until a person of interest was caught a few hours later in a suburb farther north.
Some of the best athletes ever, like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen Jr., have lived in Highland Park.
