The remake of The Last of Us Part 1 has been criticized for being little more than a “cast grab,” according to a developer on the game.
The Last of Us Part 1 animator Robert Morrison, who previously worked on Days Gone’s Sony Bend and The Last of Us Part 1 at PlayStation’s Visual Arts Studio, tweeted that the game is “the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career.” Additionally, they claim that the remake was made with “the highest level of care and attention to detail.”
The price of Last of Us Part 1 is a contributing factor in the problem, as some fans are already debating whether $70 is too much for a game that many have already bought twice.
The Last of Us subreddit was active shortly after release, debating whether the community was satisfied with the pre-order/launch day price of the remake, especially given that many of them have already played the original 2013 release or the 2014 PS4 re-release, which is, of course, still playable on PS5.
As you might expect, Morrison’s tweet received a lot of feedback. These comments ranged from expressions of gratitude and support to those expressing annoyance that the game exists given that the post-apocalyptic shooter already has a remake, that it will cost $70, or, in some cases, both.
He responded (opens in new tab) to sarcastic remarks that he’s only saying such a thing because he’s still working at another Sony first-party studio, Bend: “I do indeed work for Sony. I’m very appreciative of that. Additionally, I’ve worked for Microsoft Game Studios as a lead animator. I have owned PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC gaming systems. I have frequently stated that I support all platforms. Games should be enjoyable.”
What about the cost?
In a subsequent tweet (opens in new tab), Morrison further explained, “The price of the game is out of my control and worth is subjective to each individual.” “You are free to choose whether you want it or not. All I’m trying to say is that I’m blown away by the incredible job a talented group of people did on the project. There was a ton of passion invested in it.”
ICYMI, Naughty Dog is creating the post-apocalyptic masterpiece from the ground up with the newest technological advancements, which include “modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options,” so The Last of Us Part 1 promises to be more than just a next-gen tidy-up.
