The Beginning of the Story
The central figure enrolls in Belchero Orphanage as a novice “Bell” Cave Raider. The main character enrolls in classes and training with the other three students, Dorothea, a bit of an airhead, Tiare, who is quiet and unassuming, and Raul, who is a boy who is always full of energy. A few months later, the four finally recognize “Red Whistles” as the day of their first exploration, but by that point, they have already encountered the harsh reality of the Abyss.
Game Cycle
Players will take on the Abyss as a new Cave Raider in “Deep in Abyss” mode. While taking in a unique story, progress through the main quests, gather artifacts, and complete other quests to earn rewards like money and experience to help you characterize your character. The level of the Cave Raider will rise as you gain experience, enabling the player to take on harder Abyss levels.
Get ready to raid the Town of Orth
Prepare to face the Abyss by accepting quests and acquiring the necessary supplies in the town of Orth, the base for Cave Raiders. Your assignments as a “Red Whistle” apprentice will primarily come from Jiruo at the Belchero Orphanage, but as your Whistle level rises, so will the number of assignments you can accept. The following facilities are available in Orth.
- Guild HQ: This is where the organization that employs Cave Raiders is based. There are numerous quests available.
- An establishment that sells supplies for cave raiding. Along with pickaxes, this location also sells clothing and supplies.
- Relic Appraisal is a shop that evaluates and purchases artifacts recovered from The Abyss. Here, you can earn money and experience.
Laffi, Hablog’s wife, owns and operates Laffi’s Store, a spice shop. Spices and food can be bought here.
Exploring the Abyss
The Abyss’ primary goals include guild quests approved at the Guild HQ, main quests where an original story unfolds, and the gathering of artifacts. “Physical strength,” “fullness,” and “stamina” are the three characteristics of the main character. When acting, fullness and endurance are both diminished. While your stamina will return on its own, you’ll need to eat to regain your fullness. Regular eating is necessary to maintain fullness because once fullness is zero, stamina cannot be recovered.
—Challenges like ferocious creatures and unstable terrain must be avoided when exploring the Abyss. They deliver a devastating “game-over” performance when overpowered by a large creature.
When raiding the Abyss, the player must take into account a number of additional factors in addition to the three statuses, such as the environment, the main character’s health, the quantity of food still in the inventory, the strength of the tools, and the weight of the supplies. When choosing whether to continue with the raid, come back to the surface, or sometimes even what to bring back, the player must consider these factors and take appropriate action.
—Lugging too much will significantly slow down movement and make it harder to mine or attack.
Returning
The Raider must return to the surface after completing their task in the Abyss. The Raider’s physical and mental burdens from “The Curse of the Abyss,” however, intensify as they descend further and return to the surface. The Raider may vomit, feel significantly less full, or have blood gush from their body, all of which would reduce their feeling of fullness and stamina. They may have to take a different route back because of “The Curse of the Abyss,” creature attacks, altered terrain, or features that were present on the way down that are no longer accessible.
Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is due out for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam on September 1 in Japan and September 2 in North America and Europe.
