Context: Since AMD released the source code for its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 upscaling technology, modders have quickly developed ways to manually add it to games that use Nvidia’s rival DLSS. Although not flawless, the mods significantly enhance performance and visual quality for users without Nvidia RTX graphics cards.
Modders theorized that it was possible for any current game that uses DLSS to add FSR 2.0 after they replaced the game’s DLSS implementation in Cyberpunk 2077. With AMD’s most recent upscaler functioning in titles like Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition, Dying Light 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Control, that theory is now proving to be accurate.
The mod currently needs to be customized for every game, but the creators of the Cyberpunk version are working on an all-purpose mod. By swapping out a few of the original DLSS files for altered FSR files, users can then activate DLSS from the in-game menu.
Although Dying Light 2 and Death Stranding both support multiple resolutions, modding Cyberpunk initially only provided one FSR quality setting. Test results for the latter game indicate that the benefits are greatest at 4K but significantly diminish at 1080p. The Red Dead version’s creator issues a warning that using it online might result in a ban and that Vulkan is not supported.
Although these mods have some bugs, it would still be preferable if the creators of these games added FSR 2.0 officially. The mods, however, show that official implementation might not be all that challenging.
