Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister, was shot and killed while making a speech in Nara, Japan, on Friday morning.
Following a shotgun attack from behind, 67-year-old Abe suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest, according to NHK. When he got to the hospital, he reportedly had “no vital signs.” He was initially alert when he was taken to the hospital, but his condition worsened, according to the outlet.

Tetsuya Yamagami, a 40-year-old man who is suspected of opening fire, has been detained by local police. The suspect was quickly apprehended by law enforcement, according to photos of him.
From 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020, Abe was the prime minister. A Liberal Democrat, he belonged to the party. His wife, Akie Abe, is still alive. Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi is his brother and currently in office.
