Along the U.S.-Mexico border, the worst incident involving fatalities and human trafficking occurred last month. Only a few survivors and a tractor-trailer full of dead bodies were found outside San Antonio. The tractor-trailer had been abandoned, leaving the survivors in a hot, dry environment without air conditioning or water.
Two people of Mexican descent were detained in connection with the deaths of those passengers in the trailers’ backseats. They had expired visas and were present in the country. The investigation is demonstrating conclusively that this is all a component of the human trafficking that takes place along the southern border. The Biden administration is not in charge of the border; cartels are.
The tractor-trailer that had been abandoned had some survivors. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) is fighting for protection for the survivors who are in the hospital or have just been discharged. Castro means to protect them by letting them go free after being released from DHS custody. He requests that DHS Secretary Mayorkas not deport them or put them in jails. Castro and twenty other legislators urged Mayorkas to “exercise prosecutorial discretion” in a letter to him.
None of the people who were discovered alive could have climbed out of the truck on their own, and the lawmakers wrote that exposure to such intense heat can have long-term health effects.
They wrote that the remaining survivors “should not be concerned about their future in the United States as they focus on their recovery at San Antonio hospitals.”
They pleaded with Mayorkas to use prosecutorial latitude to prevent deportation or placement of those survivors in a detention facility.
Additionally, they requested that he grant humanitarian parole and expedite the processing of survivors’ applications for humanitarian-based visas so that the families of the deceased can visit the survivors and retrieve their bodies.
They claimed that it was only fair for our government to offer a way for relatives who are able and willing to travel to the United States to locate, bury, or bring home their loved ones.
Following the discovery of the terrible human tragedy, Governor Abbott commanded state police to conduct inspections of all trucks coming from Mexico. There had been no inspection of the abandoned tractor-trailer. Abbott cited a shortage of personnel. He cited the Biden border incident as the cause of those 50 fatalities. In retaliation, Biden charged Abbott with egotism. It’s interesting that he made no attempt to deny the border crisis he created.
The lawmakers’ letter to Mayorkas focused on finding solutions for the undocumented immigrants who were being brought into Texas illegally. Abbott has received criticism from Castro in the past. They pledged to collaborate with DHS on comprehensive immigration reform as they closed their letter.
“This tragedy is a symptom of a broken immigration system,” they wrote. “While we will keep working with you and our congressional colleagues to pass comprehensive immigration reform, we hope that you will work tirelessly with us to ensure the protection and security of the survivors and their families.”
When a Democrat talks about comprehensive immigration reform, they mean a path to citizenship for everyone as well as a general amnesty for illegal immigrants already present in the country. Due to the Biden border crisis, it is impossible to know how many illegal immigrants are currently inside the country because so many have crossed the border without being detected. To relieve the congestion at the southern border, they have been flown or driven to states away from it.
In essence, the letter requests that the tractor-trailer accident victims be freed from responsibility. Catch and release applies. As long as immigrants are permitted to enter the country without being stopped, they will keep coming. They violate American law as soon as possible. Even though few people actually qualify for asylum under current immigration law, they have been encouraged to ask for it. They enter through a port of entry without using the proper procedures. Numerous thousands of those who cross the border without using a port of entry are categorized as got aways because they flee from law enforcement.
The legal immigrants really get the short end of the stick because those who don’t are allowed to stay as though they did. Yes, there is a need for systemic change. However, the southern border must first be shut down and secured. Laws that are already on the books must be upheld. Anything less is a complete waste of time.
